How To Change Address With Social Security?

A change of address with the Social Security Administration (SSA) can be done in three ways, depending on your circumstances and the type of benefit you receive.

To avoid missing communications, delay payments, or suspension of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits if you have recently moved, it’s important to update your Social Security address. You must change your address within 10 days of moving if you receive SSI benefits.

Description of the program

It is your responsibility to change your mailing address if you are receiving retirement, disability, or survivor benefits, even if you have moved.

In the case that you do not get Social Security benefits right now, but have received them or applied for them in the past, this address change will ensure that you continue to receive notices from them in the future.

Requirements for the program

Changing your Social Security benefits address and information is possible at any time, even after a disaster.

You can update your address online, which is the easiest option

Best for: Social Security beneficiaries, such as those receiving retirement, disability, or survivor benefits.

  • Select the “My Profile” tab in your my Social Security account.
  • Your new address can be entered by selecting “Contact”.
  • Select whether you want the address change to take effect immediately or at a later date, then click “Continue.”

You can also update your address by phone

Best for: Beneficiaries of Social Security or with no U.S. mailing address, as well as anyone who is unable to update their address online.

The time it takes: The most recent report from the Social Security Administration shows that you might spend 37.8 minutes waiting for your call to be answered.

Steps:

  • You can reach us at 800-772-1213 (TTY 800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.
  • You can update your contact information by contacting a Social Security representative.
  • A caller is advised to contact Social Security earlier in the day (between 8am and 10am local time) or later in the day (between 4pm and 7pm local time) to avoid waiting longer than necessary. In addition, they recommend calling later in the month and later in the week.

You can update your address in person if none of the other options work

For: People whose Social Security record has discrepancies that prevent the SSA from identifying them by phone. If, for example, your birth certificate does not match your Social Security record’s place of birth, or your mother’s maiden name differs from that on your Social Security record, you might qualify.

The time it takes: You may be able to save time at your local office if you schedule an appointment. It depends on where you live and when you plan to visit. The acting Social Security commissioner noted that offices are typically busiest first thing in the morning, early in the week, and early in the month.

Steps:

  • Make sure you are visiting during the latest in-person hours. Social Security offices are open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • If you do not already have an appointment with Social Security, you will be given a visitor number.
  • Your Social Security representative will verify your identity and change the address on your record after verifying your identity.
